The Fort Worth zoo is where I met my first Harpy Eagle. Oh my, he was amazing! Harpy Eagles truly seem to have the face of a human and the body of an eagle, something out of the book of Revelations. I have never seenScreen Shot 2014-11-10 at 9.40.36 PM  a bird with such intense expression. The first time I saw this fascinating bird, I felt such compassion for him; he was caged in a small space and all alone. On my next visit, I realized that they had been working on his habitat and he was now in a space at least three times larger with a nesting house and a mate. I was happier for him, although I felt I could see the desire to soar the skies in his gaze.

Witnessing this great Harpy Eagle in a small caged area reminded me of Viktor E. Frankl‘s  words from Man’s Search for Meaning “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms-to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Viktor Frankl survived a Nazi concentration camp, his story is humbling and inspiring. Viktor talks about how his life truly depended on what he thought about. He watched fellow prisoners seek shelter in the past, only to wither away in the moment. He writes impressively about the mental and spiritual opportunities that each moment presents. Victor writes about his admiration of martyrs and the like, that in times of great suffering, maintained such a presence of dignity and strength.

I think about all the times that I have put myself in a small cage with my small thinking; times that I have allowed negative thoughts and feelings to run away with me.

Today, I pray we realize we are the builder of our cage and own the key to freedom.

And so it is!
