When I was thinking about the EGO today, I was wondering what would be a good picture to describe the ego. This is the one I came up with – for me it represents the mountain of “stuff” that we stand on (also see Retreat Notes – Limiting Ourselves). Our ego is created by us – WE take all the information that we have accumulated with our very own perception of how or what happened and how we felt about it & that’s what we stand on. It’s that easy or NOT. I have heard it said that EGO stands for Edging God Out – a pretty good description. Until we “know” who we really are – and that we have a choice – how we perceive things or that we just love all creation – then we are just a victim to whatever happens to us. Because it is all about us you know. I spent most of my life not realizing that I had a choice in how I saw things. I had no idea that I had a choice as to what I thought about – where I put my attention. My mind was just like a 3 year old, going and doing, thinking whatever it choose to. So if at one time I felt “not good enough” which I did – my 3 year old mind would look for everything that ever happened to me – to support me not being good enough. And boy was there plenty!
Our EGO is about Separation. Our Divine – True self is about Oneness – is about Love.
So are we fighting against ourselves? The trick is to love all of ourselves – to really “know” our True self. We are Divinely human. It’s our purpose to love the Divinely human in ourselves and others – without judgment & criticism. It doesn’t mean that we love or accept harmful behavior. It means we love the Divine in the person – not the behavior. We cannot cure hate with hate. We can only eradicate hate with love.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies
hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction….The chain reaction
of evil–hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars–must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of
annihilation.”
Martin Luther King, Jr., Strength To Love, 1963.
I pray that Today we Choose – Love – and let go – Surrender everything else to the Divine inside and outside of us.
Blessings and love,
Until next time, be radiant, radical, & real!
