When we were very young, most of us did not realize that we could choose what we thought about. Instead, we were driven by our feelings. If we were hungry, we cried until we were fed. If we were wet, we cried until our diaper was changed. When our needs were met, we were happy. It was that simple.
As we got older, life became more complicated. Most of us at some point in our early years were disciplined in some way; be it a spanking, verbally yelled at or sent to time out. Whatever the method, we felt like we had done something wrong and disappointed someone, usually a parent, teacher or caregiver. At that moment a seed of “not being good enough”, “not doing it right”, “not being worthy” or some other similar self-talk was planted. We took it personal, because it certainly felt personal at the time.
Realizing that this self defeating self-talk started at a very young age, is a step in the healing process. This is not about blaming mom or dad or anyone, it’s a process of realization. As we become aware that we took someone else’s words or actions personal (and yes at the time they may have felt really personal like in the case of abuse), we can begin to separate the behavior of others from our self worth.
With the awareness that we have the ability to choose our thoughts about our self worth, we can longer blame how we think about ourself on someone else. Or we can continue to blame someone else for our feelings of not feeling good enough and continue living a life of mediocracy. Yet, if you choose to realize how amazing, divine and limitless we are, we will have to step into the scary world of unknown, unlimited posiibilities.
When we acknowledging the fact that we get to choose what we think about; we can say yes this thought serves me; or no, this thought does not serve me; and change it.
This is not an easy process, but one that is extremely beneficial; not only for our heart and mind, but also every other heart and mind that we connect with.
Today, I pray we acknowledge our freedom to choose what we think about and how we feel. I pray we feel love and be Love’s hands, feet words.
And so it is!
blessings & love,
Until next time, BE radiant, radical & real!
