I have a friend who is so nice and sweet until her ex-husband is brought up; then she is not so nice. It’s amazing how just the mention of a person from the past can change someone’s demeanor.
Un-forgiveness can haunt us.
So this man is living his life, maybe rarely giving any thought to their past life together; but at any given moment, my friend reaches through time, grabs an old painful memory and immediately attaches herself again to the past they shared. Un-forgiveness is relentless.
It’s amazing the power we give others.
So, how do we let go?
Forgiveness is the only way to let go of people and experiences that haunt us. Forgiveness is not about saying what happened was ok, it’s about saying, “I want to be free of this pain”. So let it go, put it on the altar of love and be free. It sounds easy if you say it fast, but truly, it’s a choice. The choice is to choose love over resentment; love over holding on to pain. Whoever was involved, is, or was probably broken and dealing with their own pain.
The more we forgive and surrender the more space we have within us to love and be grateful.
Today, I pray we let go of anything that doesn’t serve love and open our heart to forgiveness of ourself and others.
And so it is!
